What Is Septoplasty?
The septum is a cartilage and bone wall dividing the left and right nasal chambers. When it is deviated (crooked), misshapen, or displaced, it can interrupt the patient’s normal breathing patterns and sometimes cause discomfort and sleeping problems. The septum can be deviated from birth or undergo changes due to trauma or injury.
Septoplasty corrects structural imperfections in the nose, restoring peace of mind and overall well-being. The procedure can also help reduce the likelihood of sinus infections and nosebleeds and improve the patient’s ability to get a good night’s rest. While the surgery is often performed alone, it can be paired with aesthetic rhinoplasty to create a more pleasing nasal shape.
A blocked nasal chamber due to a deviated septum can lead to the following issues:
- Recurring nosebleeds
- Headaches
- Sinusitis
- Sinus infections
- Allergies
- Congestion
- Facial pain
- Sleep apnea
- Snoring
- Insomnia
- Dry mouth
- Noisy breathing
